Moving Checklist

We understand moving home can be a stressful and trying time. That’s why Urmston Estate Agents, VitalSpace have partnered with Manchester Removal and Storage to put together a comprehensive moving checklist.

Our checklist is designed to help you cope with the entire moving process from the second you decide to move until the moment you’re settled in your new property.

Moving home can be very exciting, but also very stressful at the same time. From having to pack all your belongings to getting a small truck rental. VitalSpace have prepared a moving checklist and if you are methodical and organised you can make the transition run much more smoothly and save time too.

Four Weeks Before Move-Date
To ensure you get the date and the company you want, book your removals as soon as possible. Friday and Saturday can be more expensive so get booked in with your removal company well in advance.

Check your home contents insurance policy to see what cover you have regarding moving home. Many removal companies can provide insurance if your not covered.
Three Weeks Before Move-Date
Order boxes, bubble wrap and packing materials so you can start packing in good time and not leave everything to the last minute.

Let your broadband supplier know as soon as possible that you are moving to ensure you are not penalised for closing down your account.

Order change of address cards to send out to friend and family.

If you are moving out of the local area, you will have to de-register with your doctor, dentist and optician and register with a new one in your new area.
Two Weeks Before Move-Date
See you offers the best deals on gas and electric as your new home. The size and postal code of your new home will affect your bills so its worth investigating all the options.

Inform your credit cards, store cards and insurance companies of your change of address.

Inform your cable/Satellite provider of your moving dates.

Inform the DVLA of your change of address. Failure to do so is an offence.

Start to empty your freezer and throw out any out of date tins and jars in your kitchen cupboards.

Consider reviewing the security arrangements at your new home. At the very least, we recommend that you change the locks on all your outside door as your don’t know who may have previous has access to keys.
One Week Before Move-Date
Notify your local councils (current and new) of your change of address. Council tax is calculated on a daily basis so your could be due a refund.

Call your home phone company to transfer your account.

Contact your bank/building society with your change of address.

Inform TV licensing of your change of address. Keep hold of your current licence as you will not be issued a new one until your existing one expires.

Contact your mobile phone network to let them know your change of address. The simplest way is to call them from your phone as often there are no charges.

Arrange to have your mail forwarded to your new address.

Check with your estate agents that the keys to your new home will be available on the day of your move and what you should do with your own keys. Spare keys should be labelled and left in a secure place in your house.

Empty the fridge and freezer of any unwanted food.

Pack a box for use in the new home to include light bulbs, toilet rolls, candles, screwdrivers, matches, cash and a note of important telephone numbers. Put this box in your car.
Moving Day
Please remember to take final meter reading for your gas, electric and water.

Keep refreshments flowing – moving is physically demanding work.

Remove all bedding and clearly label the box for immediate unpacking for the first night in your new home.

Once the van is loaded, do one last check around the house to ensure all items have been packed. Clean your new home.
Moving In
Pick up any mail being held at the local post office.

Unload your items and begin organizing your new home.

Keep all receipts and documents in your move file and store it in an easy-to-remember location.

Get a new driver’s license and automobile registration, insurance, voting info, etc.

Contact the local paper for a new subscription if required.
