Whalley Range Estate Agents
Whalley Range is a similar suburb to Victoria Park in that it grew as an affluent suburb at the beginning of the last century, declined as the wealthy moved further away. Recently there has been substantial investment in the area, with the upgrading of properties or high quality conversions of substantial old er properties to create modern apartments.
Whalley Range is just 2 miles south of the city centre so is popular with commuters and thoses looking to live closer to the vibrant City Centre whilst being closer to Chorlton, but still on the same bus routes, the area has seen an increase in young professionals and families taking advantage of the lower prices and proximity to amenities.
Living In Whalley Range
The area has a lively, multicultural mix which is a refreshing change from the overwhelmingly white and middle class neighbouring areas of Chorlton and Didsbury. It is also increasingly attracting a strong creative community who want to make the most of the cheaper property and rental prices. There are two exceptional schools in the area – Whalley Range Grammar School and St Bedes – both of which have been near the top of the league tables for many years.
Amenities
There is a Tesco supermarket in the area, and a few rows of small shops. There are four secondary schools in the area. William Hulme’s grammar school became a state school in 2007, with a specialist subject of languages. St Bede’s College is a Roman Catholic independent school, and is down the road is Hartley College- an independent grammar school. Whalley Range 11-18 high school and ‘business and enterprise college’ is girls only, and the students are mostly of minority ethnic backgrounds. There are also a number of primary schools in the area- for example Manley Park primary school.
Property in Whalley Range
There are many spacious detached and semi-detached Victorian era houses where the wealthy past of the area becomes evident, but also many more recent flats and apartment blocks. There are some beautiful properties, especially around the College Road area, and every street appears to be studded with mature, leafy trees. Many of the original houses remain, with new development taking place on the site of demolished houses and on the site of plots left vacant during the initial stages of the area’s development. For example, around the turn of the century, in both Railton Avenue and Whalley Avenue, sixteen terraced houses were constructed on single building plots. A one-bed flat will set you back around £108,000 and a four-bedroom house starting around £300,000
Transport
Public transport is excellent with buses every few minutes to the vibrant city centre. The recently extended Metrolink tramline is proving to be very popular with convenient stops at Firswood, Chorlton and St Werburg’s Road all within easy walking distance.
