Stretford is located within the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, in Greater Manchester and has a population of 37,500. The town is situated on the main A56 road between Chester and Manchester. It is found between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal and is 3.8 miles to the southwest of Manchester city centre, 3 miles from Salford and 4 miles away from Altrincham. Neighbouring Stretford is Chorlton-cum-Hardy to the east, Urmston to the west, Salford to the north and Sale to the south. The Bridgewater Canal runs through the Town.

Stretford was originally a part of Lancashire and during the 19th century was an agricultural village known as Porkhampton. This name came from the large number of pigs produced for the nearby Manchester market. In 1894 the Manchester Ship Canal arrived. This coupled with the development of Trafford Park industrial estate assisted in the inevitable industrialisation of the town and had a substantial effect on the growth, increasing the population over the course of 10 years by 40%. This industrialisation led to the decline in the towns agricultural roots.

Famous people from the area

  • L.S Lowry, the famous Artist who’s works most commonly portrayed life in the industrial districts of Manchester and the North of England, was born in Stretford on 1st November 1887
  • Jason Kay – also known as Jay Kay and front man of the band Jamiroquai was born in Stretford on 30th December 1969. The band shot to fame in the early nineties with such songs as “Space Cowboy” and “Virtual Insanity”.
  • Morrisey, iconic singer and songwriter of eighties band ‘The Smiths’, moved from Hulme to Stretford in 1969.

Interesting facts

  • Manchester United Football Club is located in Stretford and has been since 1910.
  • Stretford has also been the home of Lancashire County Cricket Club since 1864.
  • This venue in its time played host to some influential and admired artists, including Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Bob Marley, Elton John and Lou Reed.
  • During the Second World War, Trafford Park was largely involved in the production of war material, including the Avro Manchester heavy bomber, and the Rolls-Royce Merlin engines used to power the Spitfire. This involvement resulted in Stretford being heavily targeted for bombing and was seriously damaged during the Manchester Blitz of 1940.

Without doubt, one of the main attracting features of Stretford is Victoria Park. The park was opened in 1902, after the then Stretford Urban Council shut the area’s recreation ground and bought 13½ acres from the estate of Sir Humphrey DeTrafford for a village park. It quickly grew and in its 1930s heyday boasted four tennis courts, five bowling greens and a bandstand. Victoria Park has long been seen as an oasis to families living next to the Manchester Ship Canal and Trafford Park industrial estate. The park itself is currently maintained by a charity community group known as Friends of Victoria Park.
